| Ayurvedic massage uses warm nourishing medicated oils that are chosen to suit your constitution. The massage techniques used include tapping, kneading and squeezing as well as the more traditional massage strokes you would expect. The style and flow of the massage is determined by who you are, and what your body needs for balance and wellbeing at the time. What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and those with health challenges can improve their health. Originally from India, Ayurveda is currently experiencing world-wide popularity as a revival sweeps across all continents. Ayurveda can take the form of nutritional guidance, herbal medicines, exercise therapy, specific massage techniques, meditation and many special rejuvenation and purification therapies. Preferring to focus on the type of person who has dis-ease, rather than just understanding the type of dis-ease the person has, Ayurveda is a patient-orientated system of healing. | A marma point is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissue meet, such as muscles, veins, ligaments, bones or joints. Yet marma points are much more than a casual connection of tissue and fluids; they are intersections of the vital life force and prana, or breath. According to Ayurvedic philosphy, doshas make up a person's constitution. The trinity includes vata (air), pitta (fire) and kapha (earth). Everone is born in a state of balance, or prakriti. During the aging process, factors such as anxiety, lackluster diet, or poor sleep habits cause disharmony among the doshas. Over the years, doshic imbalances begin to block the movement of free-flowing energy in the body. Eventually, the stagnation opens the door to physical and mental discomfort and disease. The idea behind massaging the marma points is to cleanse blocked energy, also called chi, by either arousing or calming the doshas. During a marma-point massage, the points are stroked in a deliberate sequence using specific oils. “I have suffered all my life with cold hands and feet. After my ayurvedic massage, I woke up the next morning with my hands pulsating with warmth and energy. Truly a magical experience!” Sandra L. | Reflexology is a healing therapy using the thumbs and fingers to give a particular form of massage to the feet. It is an extremely effective treatment for many conditions including asthma, back problems, low energy, constipation, depression, digestive disorders, eczema, hay fever, headaches, joint problems, menstrual problems, edema, sciatica, sinus problems, stress and general feelings of sluggishness. Treatment Session A treatment session lasts for 1 hour. It consists of:: 1. Soothing your feet in a foot spa. 2. Relaxing while each foot receives the reflexology massage. History Since ancient times, in Egypt, India and China, people have used pressure on their feet as a means of pain relief and health treatment. In 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald re-discovered this method. It was further developed by Eunice Ingham and came to the UK in the 1960s when Doreen Bayley established the Bayley School of Reflexology. The school directorship later went to one of her students, Nicola Hall, with whom Maggie had the privilege of personally training. Therapist: Maggie Brizzi Maggie has been a practicing reflexologist for over fifteen years and is a member of the British Reflexology Association. | ||||
